Alaska Small Boat Cruises vs. Major Cruise Lines

The Dream Catcher offers the perfect blend of rugged construction suited for Alaskan cruising and a spacious, cozy interior not typically associated with a vessel of her size. Private bathrooms and showers for each of her 6 staterooms, 2 spacious lounges, and a galley that would make any chef jealous set the Dream Catcher apart from other small Alaskan boats.

Limitations of Large 'traditional' Alaskan Cruises

Of the hundreds of thousands of adventurers that embark on Alaskan cruises each year, the vast majority do so aboard huge commercial passenger liners. These ships pride themselves on providing all the creature comforts of home, but their size and tight schedules prohibit them from taking advantage of the magnificent surroundings.

Your cruise aboard a large cruise liner is pretty well mapped out before you get underway. You won't be able to change plans due to weather or unexpected circumstances. If there is particularly good whale watching on your way through Frederick Sound, for instance, you won't be able to stop and linger as you may well want to. With as many as 4,000 guests each, the sheer size of these ships, coupled with the virtual inability to get away from other passengers (even during shore excursions) greatly reduce the overall Alaskan experience.

Freedom of an Alaskan Small Cruise

The Dream Catcher is capable of reaching far more remote places then these larger vessels, and our kayaks and skiffs allow spontaneous explorations of shore. We revel in taking in the scenery and enjoying our surroundings. Plus, our itinerary changes as conditions do; we can adjust our plans on a fly. We can spend more time in places our guests enjoy and focus on the activities that most interest our guests. We also understand that the last thing you want to experience on your Alaska small boat cruise is a crowd and we're very good at avoiding them. As a matter of fact, most of the places we visit won't have any other people. Try achieving that kind of solitude on an Alaska cruise with a major line.

An additional advantage to choosing an Alaska small cruise is the increased frequency and quality of wildlife viewing. Major cruise liners are absolutely massive and wildlife have a tendency to avoid them. The Dream Catcher is tiny in comparison and extremely non-obtrusive. Whales are inquisitive and seem to have almost as much interest in our small ship as we have in them. Other animals, such as otters and seals are too small to even been seen from the upper decks of the massive cruise liners.

“Getting there” should be as much fun as the destination, and aboard our Alaska cruises it is. Whether enjoying a secluded beach with yourself and the wildlife or hitting one of our favorite fishing holes around Prince William Sound, you will love every minute of your Alaska small boat cruise and be glad you chose to avoid the major cruise lines.
